SATURDAY 5-8 -19.38 UNITS

Not a great day yesterday but I hope to end the week on a good note. Let me know what you think about todays selections:

7 Units Western Michigan -7 -108

The Western Michigan Broncos (18-2 SU, 14-4 ATS) are in first place in the MAC West (11-1) with a nice lead on Toledo. They win with defense (42% shooting allowed) and a veteran frontcourt of 6’-7” senior center Anthony Kann (12 ppg, 7 rpg) and 6’-8” senior Mike Williams (19 ppg, 7.5 rpg). 6’-3” sophomore Ben Reed (16 ppg, 50% FGs, 4 rpg) is a sparkplug in the backcourt while 6'-6" sophomore Brian Snider has height and leads the team in assists (5.3 apg). This team has it all and is 8-2 SU/7-2 ATS on the road! They have great balance at both ends of the court and Western has won 17 of its last 18 games! Marshall (8-12) is just 5-4/6-3 ATS at home where they outscore opponents by a 69-64 average. Marshall has 6’-7” senior Marvin Black (12 ppg, 50% FGs, 7 rpg) and 6’-9” sophomore Marcus Patton anchor a decent frontcourt, but they are on a 2-5 SU/ATS run, giving up 88, 85, 77 and 68 points the last four games. Last month Western ripped Marshall 88-65!

7 Units Maryland +7.5 -102

North Carolina (14-7 SU, 11-8 ATS) once again cannot get it done on the Road, after losing to Georgia Tech, 88-77 SU. The problem is the complete lack of team defense. Now they return Home to face Maryland (13-7 SU). Carolina is just 4-6 in the ACC and really struggling with their play. One night they are stunning and the next they lay an egg. It appears that the talent is great, but very, very young. Maryland is coming off a great Home win against Florida State, 73-62. Maryland has already stuck it to the Tar Heels, 90-84. In that game, Maryland’s Jamar Smith (14 ppg, 10 rpg) had 22 points. Maryland shot 54% as a team. That is too many lay-ups. Carolina’s Sean May (16 ppg, 10 rpg) has to start playing an angrier game inside. Carolina will probably get the split here, but they really need to toughen up for March.

5 Units Nebraska +2.5 -106

Kansas (R: 5-4 SU, 4-5 ATS) has lost two of their last four games heading into Sunday. This week, after topping Texas Tech 96-77 they lost to Oklahoma State 80-60. Wayne Simien scored 25 points and J.R. Giddens had 12, but no other Jayhawk reached double figures. Giddens made 5-of-14 shots from 3-point range and the rest of the team was a combined 1-for-8. Nebraska (H: 11-2 SU, 5-3 ATS) stopped Missouri and Texas A&M this week as Nate Johnson scored 19 points and Andrew Drevo added 18. The Huskers' long-range sights are better honed when they play at home. After shooting 32 percent from the field at Kansas State on Feb. 4, the Huskers returned home and shot 45.8 percent against Missouri and 50% against the Aggies. Nebraska often plays Kansas tough in Lincoln, and could hurt the Jayhawks if KU is cold from outside. Kansas won both games a year ago, but without Hinrick and Collison, Nebraska and its home defense can squeeze out a win.

5 Units Dayton -12.5 -108

Duquesne (R: 2-6 SU, 6-2 ATS) has lost their last two games and 4 of 5 following a loss to Richmond this week that limited Duquesne to its worst shooting performance of the year in a 71-51 defeat. DU guards Bryant McAllister, Jack Higgins and Martin Osimani were a combined 3-of-20 from the field. Duquesne as a team shot 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from the 3-point arc in posting its lowest point total since a 59-45 loss to Pitt. Dayton had their nine game winning streak snapped by St. Joe's this week 81-67. Keith Waleskowski collected 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Flyers, who held a 37-30 edge on the glass. Not much hope here for the Dukes who face the top team in the A-10 (West). Dayton (H: 12-1 SU, 4-5 ATS) is flying high and at home should have little trouble.
